A Celebration without time
By Martín A. G.G. and Angel H.G.G.
What can we tell you about a band
that for fifteen years has overcome all barriers? It
came from the feverish imagination of a young German
boy who was born in Frankfurt, a passionate of the arts
and lover of Mozart, one who lacked of formal education,
but whose love for the music leaded him to found an
excellent band and a recording studio, or it is only
that without them our lives wouldn’t be the same,
we are of course talking about Lacrimosa and Tilo Wolff.
Inspired on Mozart's Requiem, with
only 17 years old, Tilo Wolff named his dream "Lacrimosa";
a decoy call of feelings and emotions that wake the
moment of agony, his first work: "Clamor",
an album with deep and melancholic sounds.
Gótica: We know the
emblematic and almost spectral Tilo, but what are the
passions of the human being behind Lacrimosa?
Tilo Wolff: I've always consider me
lover of the letters, the Romantic period in Europe
has filled me of countless emotions that I try to share
with the public… the emotions in the terror literature,
the decay in the Romantic, and the philosophy from those
centuries enrich what has been my own life and what
is Lacrimosa today…
The fear that prevailed in the
world during that incipient decade motivates him to
concrete two very important projects inside the dark
scene, the recording studio Hall of Sermon and the consolidation
of his first official album: "Angst", a total
request for the life that gets away.
G.: If you have passions, then
you have dreams, what are yours?
T.W.: Nobody knows I don't sleep enough;
I have dark dreams that make me anxious at night, actually
at every hour, I suddenly find myself floating over
an emptiness or rounded by amorphous shapes, I think
that they definitely inspire me to release my own fears
and to compose…
1992 arrives and brings with it
the second album: "Einsamkeit", which retakes
and complements the line traced by the previous album,
continuing with the seemingly an opera work, where the
emotions bloom in the midst of the desolation.
G.: Tilo Wolff must release
the music for a moment, what do you do in those moments?
T.W.: I love to go to the movies, especially
terror movies, in Europe has been developed an excellent
school for other artists in the world, for example,
I admire the work of David Lynch too much, his works
have such a devastating drama that transcends, involves
and don't allow conciliating the reason…
The following year, and after invading
other European countries with their gothic euphoria,
arrives to our ears "Satura", an album loaded
of emotions more personals and introspective, where
percussions and brass instruments are emphasized.
G.: Then you must go out a
lot Tilo.
T.W.: Actually, I consider myself introverted
and also shy… but when I am on the scenery, people
emotions touch me, give me strength, and are something
impressive…
In 1994, a sensual Finnish witch,
owner of a languid glance, decides to accompany him
in his creations and captivate his public, she is Anne
Nurmi, ex Two Witches. It was the time of "Inferno",
for many, creative climax of the band, in which we can
perceive a more aggressive and provocative sound.
G.: Since 1998 you visit our
country, do you think that during a concert the public
is different?
T.W.: It is impressive to be in front
of the Mexican public, I think there is nothing more
emotive in the world… at some occasion I closed
my eyes and when I opened them, I could notice that
many people was crying, your passion and giving inebriate
me exceedingly.
The tendencies of the following
years were eclectic, so that Tilo decided to explore
those fields in "Stille" and "Elodia",
two complementary albums which form a only and magnificent
orchestral work, where inclusively, they counted with
the participation of the London Symphonic Orchestra,
a total delight for the senses.
G.: What can you tell us about
your personal experience in Mexico?
T.W.: Mexico City and Monterrey are
lovely cities, full of color, mysticism and its people
is beautiful, and I’ve been in love with Mexico,
with its culture and folklore, also with its cooking,
tough I should recognize that at the beginning I felt
its effects, but now when I come I like to finish a
concert with a delicious dinner…
2001 arrives and brings a renewal
to the band which made possible a conceptual and refreshing
album: "Fassade"; two years later "Echos"
was released, an album with more arrogant and emblematic
sounds. And since this was a time of experimentation,
Tilo ventured in a soloist project that changed his
own scene: "Snakeskin" and an album full of
hot sounds: "Music for the Lost". However,
this new skin was not Lacrimosa's goodbye, because in
2005 was released "Lichtgestalt", an album
of celebration that shows the reign of an eternal and
masterly band.
G.: What are Lacrimosa's plans
for the future days?
T.W.: For our next tour in Mexico,
we will be recording a new album alive, hoping to capture
that giving that only the Mexican people is able to
show, we will be in several cities to thank for the
support you have offer us for fifteen years.
When the interview finished, celebrated
on the last October 4, in the morning, Tilo Wolff said
goodbye leaving greetings for all the lovers of the
ethereal and wishing us the best luck for the project
we have started.
