He was born in July 10th, 1972. Since an
early age he showed a notable artistic inclination, so
that he was considered a child prodigy. Tilo Wolff loves
the literature; and this inspires him to compose his first
verse when he was only 12 years old, which later was published
in different literary magazines.
Tilo never had any musical training,
this is that the only thing that impulse him to develop
as a musician was the love for the art and music, and
since a very early age he started with his first piano
concerts. During some time he used to go to several places,
but he finally abandoned them because that was not a good
option for him.
In 1989, at the age of 17, Tilo published
his own magazine called "dark/gothic", which
was made in collaboration of some of his friends, but
the project had not good results. So, the friendship between
him and his collaborators began to vanish it, and in the
end the project finished because of this.
Later, gradually the wish of composing
music sown in Tilo's mind, and in order to come true this
wish, he started to work in different factories to save
enough money for recording and published his first demo,
which is released on November, 1990, in a recording studio
near to Basilea.
Finally they record the first and unique
demo of the band, which is well-known as "Clamor",
and this only has two songs: "Seele in Not"
and "Requiem". The said demo was distributed
to underground levels only. An important fact is that
in the cover art of this demo is the famous harlequin
designed by Tilo Wolff.
At the beginning, the name thought by
Tilo for that project was "Glamour", and then
this was changed to "Lacrimosa", a Latin name
that comes from the last fragment of Mozart's Requiem,
written before his death.
The name is not casual, since first Mozart
is the greater influence of Tilo, and second, because
the name transmits a clearly sensation of decadence and
profound melancholy in the lyrics and music Tilo makes
in each of his musical works.
In 1991, Tilo Wolff found his own recording
studio called "Hall of Sermon", which is in
charge of Lacrimosa's rights. All of this was made with
the intention of always maintaining a total artistic freedom
in their musical works.
During the promotional tour of Satura
in the year 1993, Tilo met Anne Nurmi, who played the
keyboards and was second voice of "Two Witches";
and he asked her for supporting in the keyboards, but
only on that tour. However, after finishing the Satura
tour, Tilo conviced on Anne's talent… invited her
to be a permanent member of Lacrimosa.
In 1996, he awarded the "Alternative
Music Award", due to the euphoria caused by his single
"Stolzes Herz" in all Europe.
Big fan of movies and of reading, Franz
Kafka is his favorite author, and "The Castle"
is (in Tilo's words) the book that changed his life.
In 2004, Tilo Wolff recorded his first
soloist album that is named "Music For The Lost",
in his alternate electronic music project called "Snakeskin",
which now has two productions.
In 2006, Tilo Wolff recorded his second
soloist album that is named "Canta'Tronic",
this album was made in collaboration with the opera singer
Kerstin Doelle.
